Test on a device that can actually show Apple Pay
Apple Pay is capability-gated: Safari, an Apple device, and a card in Apple Wallet. Any other combination hides the button by design, which makes desktop-Chrome testing worse than useless, it manufactures false alarms.
Real iPhone → Safari → a product page and the checkout. Card added to Wallet. Is the button there now?
If it shows on a proper device, the button was never missing. If your customers report it missing, ask what device and browser before touching anything.
Confirm the wallet is enabled in payment settings
Apple Pay is a per-store toggle that lives under your payment provider, and it requires Shopify Payments (or one of the few supporting gateways). Gateway migrations silently drop wallets.
Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Manage → scroll to Wallets. Is Apple Pay checked? If you're on a third-party gateway, does it support Apple Pay at all?
Enable the toggle. If your gateway doesn't support Apple Pay, that's the whole answer, consider Shopify Payments for the wallet coverage alone; express checkout share of mobile orders is significant.
Check the theme's dynamic checkout buttons
On product pages, Apple Pay renders inside the theme's 'dynamic checkout button' block. Theme updates and section edits remove it without warning, checkout still shows wallets, but product-page express buying is gone.
Theme editor → product template → buy-buttons block → is 'Show dynamic checkout buttons' on?
Re-enable the setting or re-add the buy-buttons block. If your theme's update changed the product template, re-apply the setting there too.
Re-verify your domain association
Apple validates every domain serving Apple Pay via a hosted verification file. Domain changes, DNS moves, and proxy/redirect rules that intercept the well-known path silently break validation.
Did the button disappear around a domain or DNS change? That timing is the tell.
Settings → Payments → Wallets: remove Apple Pay, save, re-add it, which re-runs domain verification for the current domain. Make sure no redirect rule rewrites or blocks hidden well-known paths.
Check cart and product eligibility
Subscription products and some app-modified carts route through flows where express wallets don't render on the product page. It looks like a bug; it's eligibility.
Test a plain, one-time, in-stock product with no bundle/subscription app attached. Does Apple Pay show there?
If plain products show it, the wallet is fine; the subscription/bundle path is the constraint. Check that app's docs for wallet support instead of debugging the theme.
Suspect the last theme or app update
This is the one that costs real money: everything was configured correctly, then a theme deploy or an app update dropped the wallet buttons, and mobile conversion sagged for days before anyone noticed.
Preview an unmodified copy of the theme (or Dawn). Wallet buttons present there but not on your live theme?
