How to place a test order on Shopify
There are exactly three ways to test a Shopify checkout: the Bogus Gateway, Shopify Payments test mode, or a real transaction you refund. Here is how to do each, what it catches, and what it misses.
The Bogus Gateway
Shopify's built-in fake payment provider. It simulates success, decline, and gateway errors without moving money. The catch: activating it means deactivating your real card provider while you test, so do it in a quiet window.

Open your payment settings
Shopify admin → Settings → Payments. If a real credit card provider is active, deactivate it first (you can reactivate it right after testing). Shopify allows only one card provider at a time.

Activate the Bogus Gateway
In the Payments settings, choose 'See all other providers' (under third-party providers), search for 'Bogus Gateway' labeled '(for testing)', and click Activate.

Place an order like a customer
Open your storefront, add a product to the cart, and go through checkout with any name and address.

Use the Bogus test card numbers
Card number 1 simulates a successful transaction, 2 simulates a declined card, 3 simulates a gateway error. Use anything for name, any future expiry, and any 3-digit CVV.

Verify the order and any integrations
Check Orders in the admin for the test order, then confirm your email notifications, fulfillment apps, and analytics events fired as expected.

Deactivate the Bogus Gateway
Go back to Settings → Payments, deactivate Bogus Gateway, and reactivate your real payment provider. Cancel the test order to keep reports clean.

Shopify Payments test mode
Closer to production than the Bogus Gateway because it exercises the real Shopify Payments checkout, including 3D Secure flows. Go to Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Manage, scroll to the bottom, and enable Test mode. While it's on, real payments are disabled and checkout accepts test cards only.

Turn test mode off the moment you finish. While it's enabled, real customers cannot pay you.
Real card, then refund yourself
Buy the cheapest product with your own card, confirm everything end to end (order confirmation email, fulfillment app, conversion pixels, payout record), then refund it. This is the only method that tests your live payment configuration exactly as customers experience it.
Two costs to know: the payment processing fee is not returned when you refund (roughly 2.9% + 30¢ kept), and the order still lands in your reports, so tag it "test" and exclude it from analytics.

- Taxes, shipping rates, and totals for one address
- Whether checkout works right now, on your device
- The theme update that breaks checkout next Tuesday
- iOS Safari, where most mobile checkout bugs live, if you tested on desktop
- A discount code or shipping zone you didn't try
- An app update silently removing Apple Pay or Shop Pay
- Anything that happens between manual tests
That second column is why stores get burned: a manual test order proves checkout worked at one moment, on one device, for one path. Checkout regressions arrive on someone else's update schedule. Do I pay fees on a Shopify test order?
Not with the Bogus Gateway or Shopify Payments test mode, since no real money moves. If you test with a real card and refund yourself, the payment processing fee is not returned when you refund, so a $100 test order costs you roughly $3 in kept fees.
Do test orders show up in my analytics and reports?
Yes. Test orders create real order records and can fire your marketing pixels. Cancel the test order after verifying, tag it 'test' so you can filter reports, and expect a small blip in analytics for that day.
How do I delete a test order on Shopify?
Open the order → Cancel order (choose 'Other' as the reason). Once canceled, orders placed through test gateways can be deleted from the order page. Orders paid with a real card can be canceled and refunded but not always deleted.
Is it safe to enable test mode on a live store?
Shopify Payments test mode disables real payments while it is on, so real customers cannot check out. Only enable it during a quiet window, verify quickly, and turn it off immediately.
